This fine art print features Irises by Vincent van Gogh, painted in 1890 during his time at the psychiatric hospital in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. For Van Gogh, the painting was primarily an exercise in colour contrast – purple blooms set against a yellow background, the decorative forms made all the more striking by that tension between opposites.

There’s a hidden detail worth knowing: the irises were originally purple, but the red pigment has faded over time, shifting them to the blue we see today. Van Gogh painted two versions of this bouquet – this one lives at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
